Description:AMCHA, founded in 1987 by a Dutch Holocaust survivor, was established for the purpose of giving psychological and social support to Holocaust survivors. AMCHA's holistic approach assists survivors through individual and group counseling, support groups and social clubs in its four branches. AMCHA's staff are trained to deal with the specific issues affecting survivors, providing services in an atmosphere of safety and comfort to an aging population traumatized by their Holocaust experiences. The demand for AMCHA's services has produced the need for satellite facilities in the South and Center of Israel. AMCHA also serves the second generation, survivors' children who have suffered from the psychological traumas of their parents.
Programs:Daily Moadonim (social clubs) provide numerous programs of interest to AMCHA's survivor clients. Social clubs for Russian speakers help in the absorption of this aging population. A core of trained and supervised volunteers (many of them survivors themselves) visit homebound survivors throughout the country. Videotaping of testimonies, bibliotherapy, art and music classes aid in the approach to informal therapy. Counseling sessions for the individual client and group counseling, along with support groups, form the overall approach to therapy for this fragile population. In the past year services have grown by 20% per year, and the projected growth rate in 1999 will be at least 20%.
