Purpose:To hold meetings between Jews and Arabs, to disseminate in Israel and abroad the idea of coexistence between Jews and Arabs, to organize cultural activities, sport and intercultural ties for Arab and Jewish citizens, to promote Arab culture, and help in the establishment of similar centers.

Description:Beit-Hagefen was founded in 1963 and acts on the local, national and international levels to create a venue for cultural and social meetings between Jews and Arabs, in order to promote coexistence. The center acts as a non-partisan association, supported by the Haifa Municipality and the Ministry of Education. Activities: meetings between Jews and Arabs, courses, women's clubs, a public library, art gallery, theater, visitor center, and development of ties with Jordan and the Palestinian Authority.
Programs:Beit-Hagefen holds two annual festivals: "The Holiday of Holidays" (Hannukah - Christmas - Ramadan - December/January) and "The Arab Book and Culture Month" (May/June).
Accomplishments:
  • 1. Organization and production of two annual nationwide festivals: Arab Book and Culture Month and The Holiday of Holidays.
  • 2. Visitor and meeting center (25,000 visitors in 1997/98).
  • 3. Development of cultural ties with Jordan and the Palestinian Authority and with the Arab world.
Future Objectives:
  • 1. Development of "People for People" ties with the Palestinian Authority with the support of the European Union.
  • 2. Organizing a huge Festival toward the year 2000.
Effectiveness:The effectiveness of our programs is measured through the number of visitors, the response of schools to meetings between Jewish and Arab students, media coverage regarding our festivals and exhibitions, and the number of participants in courses.
Present Needs:1. Expansion of the visitor and meeting center

2. Installment of air conditioning and furnishing rooms for lectures and courses

3. Renovation of the theater hall (stage, chairs, air conditioning, etc.)

Biography of
the Main Person:
The chairperson of Beit-Hagefen is Advocate Maher Elmaddy, a well known attorney in Haifa. He has served for over a year as chairperson of the Beit-Hagefen Board of Directors, which includes 7 Arab and 7 Jewish members.
