Activities:
Geographic Location:In Jerusalem area
Board Members:7
Part Time Employees:12
Description:A.H.A.V.A. is the result of more than forty years of combined teaching experience. The staff realized that many students, despite years of education, couldn’t speak English upon matriculation. Parents who can afford after-school enrichment do so, but many low-income families in the Mitspeh Yericho area cannot afford that luxury. So A.H.A.V.A. developed the STEP-BY-STEP curriculum. If the child is exposed early and often enough to correct forms of English in an interactive and conversational way, they absorb English quickly and naturally. This linguistic success gives the children self-confidence and widens their future career possibilities, despite a weaker socioeconomic background.
Programs:A.H.A.V.A. runs two separate programs for Hebrew and English speakers, which currently serve over 80 students. We also run special projects such as: story hour, a nursery school introductory program, the new “Healthy Behaviors” curriculum, individual tutoring and Bagrut preparation classes for those students who weren’t exposed to our step-by-step method at a young age. Most of the students who are in our program need some type of subsidy because their parents cannot afford the actual tuition. We currently run classes in Mitzpeh Yericho, Maaleh Adumim, Kfar Adumim,Alon and Michmas.
Accomplishments:
  • Enrollment jumped from 0 to 90 in the past four years.
  • Please see our website ahava.n3.net to view the beautiful essays and poetry that our students create.
  • We have had requests from over six communities to train teachers and initiate the program.
Future Objectives:
  • Increase the number of classes in four nearby communities to reach an additional 60 students
  • To conduct two teacher training programs in the Jerusalem area.
  • To adapt the unique A.H.A.V.A. STEP-BY-STEP method curriculum for the Hebrew Speaker’s elementary school program.
Effectiveness:The English speaker’s program holds an academic fair where the children display their work and perform. The Hebrew speakers perform a play that they have developed themselves. The true evaluation comes with the additional children that enroll every year and the students who will succeed in their matriculation testing.

Comments:Our achievements are not measured in numbers, but rather in individual stories. We had one student who was in the lowest English level. After one year in our program, she advanced to the highest level, scoring a "94" on the national English exam. The grade was not the victory. This student knows she can improve. Her boosted self-confidence is a gift that she keeps forever. We have other “success” stories like this one; a seed planted takes time to grow but eventually bears fruit.

Biography of
Ms. Gaila Cohen Morrison:
The director of this enterprising organization has over twenty years of teaching experience in the field of English language. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from McGill University, a Canadian teaching certificate and the Israeli Education Ministry ESL teaching qualification. She is also the mother of five. Through her personal and classroom experience, Ms. Morrison realized that the earlier you work with children, and the more conversational your structure, the more children absorb and utilize.
